Report reveals RAF Tornado GR4 ‘catastrophe’ narrowly avoided when landing

A report has revealed how an RAF Tornado GR4 almost collided with two aircraft off RAF Lossiemouth.

The Tornado GR4 fighter aircraft was coming in to land at the Moray base in cloud when a Swedish aircraft passed across its nose about 200m ahead.

A second aircraft was then spotted by the Tornado crew but the crew claimed no warning had been given.

The Civil Aviation Authority report indicated it was “fortuitous” that the end result was not catastrophic.

The incident happened in October last year.
